In 1972, France was shaken by a landmark trial that would leave an indelible mark on its history. The case of Marie-Claire, a young woman wrongly accused of performing an illegal abortion with the help of her mother and two other defendants, would become a turning point in the fight for women’s rights. The courtroom was dominated by men, and the verdict seemed all but certain: prison for the women, while the rapist walked free. The accused women’s last hope lay with Gisèle Halimi, a pioneering lawyer known for her fearless challenge to patriarchal norms and her unwavering commitment to justice. Halimi’s unorthodox approach to the case would not only change the fate of the accused but also pave the way for a seismic shift in the way women were treated by the law. As Halimi delved deeper into the case, she discovered a web of systemic corruption and sexism that threatened to silence the women and perpetuate the status quo.
